Oak Park, 91377

Electrical contractor in Oak Park.

Oak Park is a planned community of a few thousand homes between Agoura Hills and Thousand Oaks, almost all of them built in one forty-year span and now reaching the age where the electrical service is the question. County Line Electric works here from its office in Newbury Park.

What is different here

No city hall, one county, and a whole community the same age.

Oak Park is not a city. It is an unincorporated community in Ventura County, so electrical permits come from the Ventura County Building and Safety Division rather than a city office, and the utility is Southern California Edison. The homes were built from the late 1960s through the 1990s as a master-planned community along Medea Creek and the ridges around it, with homeowners associations that still review exterior changes in many of the tracts.

That one fact, a community built in one long wave, drives most of the electrical work. The original services were sized for gas heat, gas water heaters and gas ranges, and a family electrifying one appliance at a time eventually finds the panel full. The ridges and open space on the edges of the community are inside mapped fire hazard zones, and the streets backing onto them see the same Edison shutoffs as the rest of the Conejo hills.

The service

The panel is usually the first project.

An Oak Park house built in 1980 most often has a 100 to 200 amp service and a panel with every slot in use. Adding a Level 2 EV charger, a heat pump or an induction range to it without a load calculation is how a main breaker starts tripping on a hot evening. County Line runs the calculation first and tells the owner plainly whether the charger fits on the existing service, whether load management can make it fit, or whether a service upgrade with Edison comes first.

Where an upgrade is the answer, County Line handles the utility application, the permit with Ventura County, the planned outage and the new panel, and sizes it for the house the family will have in ten years, not the one it has today. Then the charger, the generator inlet or the transfer switch go in on a service that can carry them.

Backup and lighting

For the streets on the ridges, and the remodels.

On the streets that back onto the open space, a standby generator on the natural gas line and an automatic transfer switch is the usual backup, sized to the loads that matter, and placed where the HOA and the clearances allow. County Line prepares the HOA submittal with the manufacturer drawings when one is required.

Kitchen and great-room remodels are the other steady work: recessed lighting replaced with Lutron dimming and a few keypads, sometimes motorized shades on the west-facing glass, wired while the ceilings are open. It is smaller than a full HomeWorks system and it is the version most Oak Park remodels want.

Oak Park questions

Who issues electrical permits in Oak Park, California?

Oak Park is unincorporated Ventura County, so electrical permits are issued by the Ventura County Building and Safety Division. County Line Electric pulls the permit and schedules the inspections as part of the job.

Can I add an EV charger to my Oak Park house without upgrading the panel?

Sometimes. County Line Electric runs a load calculation on the existing service first. Many Oak Park homes built in the 1970s and 1980s can carry a charger with load management; others need a service upgrade with Southern California Edison first, and County Line says which before anything is installed.
